Between 1971 and 1981 a London Scottish Schools Club match took place annually between the East and West, with teams coming from Watson’s, Heriot’s, Glasgow High School and Glasgow Academy. At a later meeting held at the Caledonian Club on 7th October 1981, golfers from the above clubs plus Loretto met to form the current society, with the inaugural competition taking place at Royal Mid Surrey in 1982.

The following year, the competition moved to Denham Golf Club where it has remained ever since. In 2024 56 Scots competed for The Anniesland Trophy and renewed acquaintances over a splendid Denham lunch. Denham has its own railway station with trains running from London Marylebone which take about 25 minutes. The clubhouse is a short walk from the station. This is perhaps a useful option for those who live in London and do not wish to drive to the club.

Some school teams, who have participated in the past, have dropped by the wayside, most notably Aberdeen Grammar, Dollar, Marr and Royal High, and it would be great to see their school teams represented again. After a gap of several years a team from Heriots took part whilst Hutchesons was represented by one player who was part of the Wanderers (West) team. The committee has promoted the formation of Wanderers teams to encourage all golfers educated in Scotland to take part and for those who wish to experience the day but are unable to raise a team of four players.

The event consists of an 18 hole stableford in the morning, lunch, a 9 hole greensome competition in the afternoon, followed by tea and prize-giving, finishing around 6.30pm. Any golfers who may wish to enter a school team, or take their place in a Wanderer’s team, should send an email to the secretary, John Burleigh, whose contact details are on the Links page, prior to 1st June, with details of their school affiliation and handicap. The 2026 event will be held on THURSDAY 25th June.

As the popularity of the summer event grew, an Autumn Meeting was held in 1996 at Denham to play for the Secretary’s Quaich. In 2006 this outing was amalgamated with another popular St Andrew’s Day event which had been running for 10 years at the Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

St Andrew’s Day outings have been held at the splendid Royal Wimbledon Golf Club, St George’s Hill Golf Club and Woking Golf Club. The day consisted of 18 holes of St Andrew’s greensomes followed by a hearty Scottish lunch in friendly company. After a 4 year absence the 2024 event was held at Clandon Regis GC on Friday 29th November. Please see the St Andrew’s Day pages for more information.

In addition to the above meetings we have been advised about the Loretto School Foursomes. This takes the form of an 18 hole foursomes stableford for teams from schools with the event being held at West Sussex GC. The cost is approximately £100 for golf and lunch. Further details about participating in future years can be obtained from Andrew Brown whose contact info can be found as the Loretto representative on the Links page .
